John H. Mackison


YORK John H. Mackison, age 76, of Manchester Township, died at 11:50 p.m. Sunday, May 20, 2012 at York Hospital. He was the companion of Geraldine D (Whitcomb)Croft.

Born September 27, 1935 in Delta, a son of the late James and Josephine (Handley) Mackison, he was a graduate of Kennard Dale High School, where he had been active in the Future Farmers of America. He was a retired after more than 30 years in truck sales, and also retired from Hughes Wheel and Axle. He was a member of Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church, the York County Racing Club, the Viking Athletic Association, and the Hawk Gunning Club.

 One of the winningest drivers in central Pennsylvania, Mr. Mackison was best known for his racing career. He was a season champion at Willow Grove, Lincolnway, Susquehanna, and Port Royal Speedways. He also ran NASCAR races at Daytona Beach, and Martinsville, and Darlington speedways.

In addition to his companion of ten years, Mr. Mackison is survived by two daughters, Jennifer E. Doran, and her husband Matthew, of York, and Jill J. Zart of York; a son, John H. Mackison, II, and his wife Kristine, of York; six grandchildren, John Hunter Mackison, Jordan Mackison, Patrick Doran, Natalie Doran, Sophia Zart, and David Zart; and a sister, Jane Ruff, and her husband Chester, of Dover. He was also preceded in death by a son, Paul Mackison, and a brother, James Mackison.

A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Kuhner Associates Funeral Directors, Inc., 863 S. George St., York (the former Hahn Home). Private burial will be in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the York County Racing Club, 568 Yale St., York PA 17403; or to the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing, 100 Baltimore Road, York Springs, PA 17372.
